Imagine you are on the edge of a cliff, looking down into the abyss. You sway backwards and forwards as your breath catches in your throat.

Feel this fear. This is the fear that almost all final year students will feel as they come to the end of their degrees and have to step out into the big wide world and find a job. It can feel like standing on a cliff edge.

But never fear, the BHive Academy will provide the bridge across, helping graduates to get jobs in the Creative Sector.

“Color, animals, nature, old films, science fiction, dreams and vivid imagination inspire me. I like to create snapshots from dreams and other worlds in my work, leaving the viewer to reflect upon their own dreams, imagination and experiences to gather their own meaning from the illustrations.

This piece was made using handmade cut and paste collage, as are nearly all of my works. First I select images that appeal to me, whether I have a theme in mind or not. I usually go with my instinct rather than trying to force an idea as I prefer to work in an organic way and I feel this reflects in my work.

It was inspired by the sense of wonder and adventure you have as a child. You would make a tent in your front room, garden, anywhere you could, and sometimes pretend you were off in a far away land getting ready for the exciting world, or you would go out into the real world and pretend you were somewhere different and exciting with made up creatures and things to do. Part of my reason for doing this, and many other of my pieces, is that I don’t want to ever lose that sense of wonderment and imagination, and I want to hopefully inspire people to get away from the real world for a while and surrender to the inventive and adventurous world most of us forget about as we grow up. ” -Laura Redburn / cardboardcities. B-Hive is a Birmingham based creative competition, it encourages people from all forms of the creative industry from PR, Branding, Advertising, Digital and Marketing. It provides students with such valuable insights into the real world and promotes creativity in Birmingham and the surrounding area. I have only great things to say about them, here is my story.

I entered the B-Hive competition in March 2012. I’d never heard of it before and hate to think that I nearly missed out. The competition was to answer a creative brief for Visit Birmingham. My campaign began as above the line but I soon realised it had transformed to be very digitally driven. The people at B-Hive saw this and entered me into the digital category and I’m so glad they did. From this point B-Hive has provided me with some invaluable experiences, the most valuable being work placements including two weeks here with LHM media.

The realisation of Digital advertising being a direction I might take, has been a journey from fine art to graphic design, specialising in advertising and now focusing even more on digital and looking into the future. Through this journey the most valuable thing I have learnt is the importance of a good idea. Never put style over substance. This knowledge crosses all areas of design, especially within digital. Whatever you create has to be worthwhile and provide something more than just looking pretty.

I am currently nearing the end of my placement at LHM and it’s become so much clearer to me what life in an agency could be like (all good from LHM). I’ve loved my time here, LHM is a rare and wonderful place to work, with lovely people and more importantly the baking of LHMmmm on a Friday, which I entered cautiously, competing against Steve’s Victoria Sponge.

In such a short space of time I’ve gained so much from LHM, learning the creative side aswell as the account handling and social media, it’s been a wonderful two weeks. I encourage all creatives to enter B-Hive, support Birmingham’s creative industry and especially look out for LHM Media.

I realise this is old- Christmas 2010 to be exact, but before I used tumblr to record all the things I found interesting I just used bookmarks, and so scrolling through them today I discovered this wonderful British ad. Completely different from any Christmas idealistic images I’ve seen, but it’s truthful without being judgmental and I think thats why it works well.

New Reggae Reggae Sauce animated ad. Finally giving Levi Roots’ brilliant sauce and song the ad it deserves.

It was created by Aardman and was mentioned today in a talk I went to at the Cheltenham Design Festival, the fire element was highlighted for the fact that it could have been created using some fancy software but the simpler way of just using red, orange and yellow plasticine was the best way and it feels right for the style of animation.
